What to Ask the Surgeon

These are guidelines for a patient to follow when they are considering surgery. You, the patient, need to be certain that you understand what your disease or problem is and how you should expect to feel after the surgery.

The surgeon will be there to answer any questions you may have, but it's up to you, the patient, to make sure you understand the disease and the risks and benefits of having or not having the procedure. You should not feel embarassed about calling your surgeon for more information.

You need to know how you will feel after surgery, including any pain, discomfort, or disability. By being well-informed, and knowing what to expect, you usually do better after your surgery.

It is good for you to bring a spouse, relative or friend when you meet with your surgeon. They can offer support by listening and asking questions. If no one can come with you, bring a note pad to write down important information the surgeon may tell you.

Before a procedure, you, the patient should ask the following questions:

Is the surgeon board certified?

How many (of a particular procedure) has the surgeon performed?

What is the natural course of the disease if you do not have surgery?

What does the surgeon hope to accomplish by performing the planned surgery?

What are the risks and benefits to this procedure?

What are the other surgical treatment options?

Is this an inpatient or outpatient procedure?

Would I be required to stay overnight?

What steps are necessary to prevent a drug reaction?

Is it okay to take aspirin or over-the-counter medications prior to surgery?

Is there a special diet which I need to follow either before or after my surgery?

How will I feel the day of surgery, and the days and weeks after?

Will I have a bandage, drains or a cast?

What kind of bandage?

Will I have discomfort after, and how will that be controlled?

Will I be able to take a shower or bathe with the bandage?

What can be done to prepare for surgery the night before?

What is the recovery period?

What do I or my family need to know to care for myself after surgery?

Will I need special equipment such as a sling, crutches, cane or walker?

Is physical or occupational therapy necessary?

How will my activity be limited after my surgery and for how long?

When will I be able to drive?

When can I return to work? Be sure to inform your surgeon of the physical requirements of your job, for example, lifting or prolonged standing.

When will I find out the results or outcome of my surgery?

When will I need to return for a follow-up visit?

Does the hospital offer a support group?

What is the cost of this surgical procedure and is it covered by insurance?
